Kavita Datta
Kavita Datta is Professor of Development Geography and Director of the Centre for the Study of Migration at Queen Mary University of London. Her research spans migration studies coalescing around issues of money, food and gender. She has a long-standing interest in remittance studies, the financial, emotional and infrastructural dimensions of these practices, and impacts upon migrant well-being. More recently, she has explored the interplay between food and migration in relation to food cultures and insecurities among migrant communities and food/ remittances in contexts of severe acute malnutrition. Her current collaborative project, Remitting for Resilience, is exploring the climate adaptation, migrant remittances and food insecurity nexus. She deploys gendered intersectional perspectives to better understand diverse aspects of transnational mobility. Her research is based in the UK, Zimbabwe and Botswana.
Tim Brown is a geographer whose research explores the productive and transformative potential of public health discourses. His work examines how ideas of health and risk shape subjectivities, behaviors, and spaces through interventions made in the name of health. Within the field of critical public health geographies, Tim has studied issues ranging from HIV/AIDS and the social construction of risk to the historical development of nineteenth-century urban “healtheries” and Black women’s responses to being positioned as an “at risk” community in breast cancer interventions. His recent work engages with global health as both an emergent discourse and a mode of cross-border intervention, including UKRI-funded projects aimed at improving nutrition and health outcomes for children in rural and urban Zimbabwe. Tim serves on the international editorial board of Health & Place and the advisory board of Social Science & Medicine.
