The International Symposium on Migration and Mobilities at the University of the Western Cape, Cape Town, South Africa responds to the evolving need to examine mobilities on various scales, through collaborative local and global partnerships and interdisciplinary approaches. The symposium thematically covers issues including the social inclusion of vulnerable refugees and migrants, food security of migrants during the COVID-19 pandemic, everyday mobilities in cities, and innovation in research for societal impact. The aim of the symposium is to discuss these contemporary issues and engage with academic researchers, international and governmental organisations, policy makers, and community and civil society groups, offering perspectives from Africa and globally.

Migration, Food Security and Crisis Management in the Gulf

The participants in this workshop presented and discussed the latest research on the changing dynamics of labour migration to the Gulf from Asia and Africa. The workshop has a sub-focus on gender and the food security of migrants and their dependants in the context of crisis management during COVID-19. The workshop aims to facilitate discussions around food strategies for migrants, refugees, and other vulnerable groups in crisis circumstances.

18th Annual Assembly of the Canadian Association for Food Studies (CAFS): Reckonings, Reimaginings, and Reconciliations, Within and Through Food Systems

The Hungry Cities Partnership (HCP) and the MiFOOD Project recently participated in the annual conference of the Canadian Association for Food Studies (CAFS) at York University, Toronto. This event was part of the 2023 Congress of the Humanities and Social Sciences. The theme of the CAFS conference was ‘Reckonings, Reimaginings, and Reconciliations, Within and Through Food Systems’ and explored food as dynamic productive and resistant sites of mistreatment and invention, ill-health and well-being, and separation and hospitality. The MiFOOD Project organized three sessions on international migration and urban food security, which took place on May 31, 2023.

2nd Annual International Migration Conference: “Food (In)Security and Migrants on the Move”

The International Institute of Migration and Development (IIMAD) and the MiFOOD Network of the Hungry Cities Partnership (HCP) in partnership with the Balsillie School of International Affairs and the International Migration Research Centre (IMRC) jointly host an International Migration Conference to discuss the highly topical issue of the relationship between food insecurity and international and internal migration. The program addresses four main themes: (a) food security precarity of mobile populations during COVID-19 in Asia and Africa; (b) the food security challenges confronting forced migrants (asylum-seekers and refugees) in the Global South; (c) the migrant food environment in cities of the South; and (d) rural-urban linkages and food security in China and Africa. The Conference features presentations and case studies from a wide variety of locales by leading international scholars and experts on migration and food security. The Conference also features Professor Daniel Tevera of the University of the Western Cape, South Africa and Professor Kavita Datta of the Queen Mary University of London.

MiFOOD Inception Workshop: Precarity, Exclusion and Migrant Food Insecurity in Cities of the Global South

The MiFOOD Inception Workshop will allow partners to present their research plans targeting Workstream 1 of the MiFOOD project on Precarity, Exclusion and Migrant Food Insecurity in Cities. The workshop aims to facilitate dialogues and community building among partners, address research challenges, and discuss future activities.

International Launch of Migration and Food Security (MiFOOD) SSHRC Partnership Grant Project

Migration within the Global South now exceeds that from South to North and migrants and refugees also make up a significant proportion of the estimated two billion people globally who are highly food insecure, a number exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. The connections between migration and food security are central to the new MiFOOD Project led by researchers at Wilfrid Laurier University (WLU) and the Balsillie School of International Affairs (BSIA), and implemented by the Hungry Cities Partnership. MiFOOD poses several key questions: To what extent is migration a response to food insecurity? Does migration lead to better food security outcomes for migrants and their dependents? What policy interventions might mitigate migrant food insecurity in migration corridors and destinations?
The seven-year MiFOOD Project is supported by a $2.5 million Partnership Grant from the Social Sciences and Humanities Council (SSHRC) and contributions from partners of $6.2 million for a total funding envelope of $8.7 million. MiFOOD will link teams of faculty and graduate student researchers at WLU, the BSIA, and the IMRC with the University of Waterloo, the University of Fraser Valley and colleagues at six other Canadian universities, three UK universities and university partner teams in China, Ecuador, Ghana, India, Jamaica, Kenya, Mexico, Mozambique, Namibia, Qatar, Singapore and South Africa. MiFOOD will also work closely on research and knowledge mobilization activities with several international organizations including the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the International Labour Organization (ILO), the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) and the Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN).
