Sustainable Development in the Digital Age: Harnessing Technology for Global Climate Partnership in Africa

Oluwaseyi D. Agboola, Mulugeta F. Dinbabo, & Sean T. Sithole

Although technology-driven interventions are central to global climate partnerships, Africa’s dual challenge renders implementation difficult. The continent is highly vulnerable to climate change and faces a significant digital divide, as over half the population lacks digital literacy and access. This results in underutilisation of technology for climate adaptation and resilience. While much research focuses on viewing digital technology solely as a solution, often ignoring its potential challenges and internal obstacles, this study explores how digital technologies can enhance climate resilience in Africa and identifies factors influencing their adoption. Using secondary data, this research analyses policy documents and literature to assess digital climate strategies and synthesises findings to highlight gaps and best practices. It reveals that technology transfer alone is inadequate; a shift towards local innovation and capacity-building is essential. It recommends prioritising digital infrastructure development so African communities can fully leverage, participate and benefit from digital innovations for climate resilience.
