“New Directions in South-South Migration” Launched at the 4th Annual MiFOOD Conference

A highlight of the 4th Annual MiFOOD Conference in Mexico City was the launch of the new open access volume New Directions in South-South Migration, edited by Jonathan Crush, Sujata Ramachandran, and Abel Chikanda. The book offers a timely and critical contribution to the growing body of work on migration within the Global South, with case studies spanning Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East.

The launch session began with opening remarks by Jonathan Crush, who provided the context and motivation for the book project. He was followed by Mulugeta Dinbabo, who offered an early reflection on the importance and relevance of the volume’s content for migration research, particularly in African contexts. Sujata Ramachandran then presented an overview of the book’s chapters, summarizing the major findings and themes that emerge across the diverse case studies. Abel Chikanda concluded the session with a focused discussion of his own chapter and the key insights from his research.

The volume challenges dominant North-South migration narratives and sheds light on the diverse trajectories, drivers, and consequences of South-South migration. It is an important resource for researchers, practitioners, and policymakers engaged in global migration, development, and urban governance.

Published by Springer in 2024, New Directions in South-South Migration is available open access and can be downloaded here.
