The project aims to explore the rural-urban connections between households in Matangwe village and the neighbouring cities and small towns such as Kisumu city and Bondo Municipality in western Kenya and the contributions to food security and nutritional practices. We do this by engaging with local stakeholders and community partners (Caring Partners Global in Matangwe and Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology (JOOUST) in Bondo, Western Kenya), that are located in Siaya County, western Kenya and work in the rural communities in the region. The project addresses the following specific objectives: (1) To assess household food security and nutritional status of households in Matangwe village, Western Kenya; (2) To explore the rural-urban interlinkages and the impacts on nutritional practices and the food security of HHs in Matangwe village, Western Kenya; and (3) To explore the shifts in nutritional food practices and food security of households in Matangwe village, Western Kenya. This project adopts a cross-sectional study design drawing from mixed methods research, including a survey with 500 rural households in western Kenya, 5 focus groups with homogenous groups of male and female participants and with households with children under five years in Matangwe village, key informants interviews with 10 community leaders and key decision makers, and 10 in-depth interviews with lay community members.
