Beyond Informality: Migrants in the Popular Food Economy in Quito

Mercedes Eguiguren, Yolanda Alfaro

Drawing on a broad notion of informality, conceptually linked to the category of the popular, this study aims to examine the case of Ecuador, in order to understand how migrants are inserted in the informal food market in Quito. We are interested in establishing a dialogue with the popular economies approach, to interrogate different types of labor arrangements and commerce in which migrants find employment, which have in common the lack of a contract, and of access to social protection benefits.

Specific objectives:

  • To understand the role of migration status in the insertion of international migrants in the informal and popular food market in Quito.
  • To understand what kind of social relationships are formed between international migrants and the social networks of vendors previously established in the popular food market in Quito.
  • To carry out a narrative cartography of the trade activities of international migrants in the markets of San Roque and Tumbaco in Quito.
