Migration and Technology: Governance Innovations, Challenges, and Future Directions

Join us for an engaging workshop that explores the intersection of migration and technology, organized by the International Migration Research Centre (IMRC), the MiFOOD Network, and the Balsillie School of International Affairs (BSIA), in collaboration with the newly launched Migration+Technology Hub and the BSIA-UWC Centre of Excellence in Migration Technology and Governance. This event will explore how technological advancements are reshaping migration patterns, experiences, and policies. Through interdisciplinary discussions, experts will examine digital tools for migrants, technology in border control, and the influence of social media on migration narratives, while addressing ethical considerations and proposing future directions for research and governance. The workshop will feature keynote presentations, panel discussions, and collaborative sessions, fostering a comprehensive understanding of these critical issues.

MiFOOD Photovoice Study Training Workshop

On June 11, 2024, the MiFOOD Project successfully conducted a specialized training workshop for its team members, focusing on the implementation of photovoice studies across its various initiatives. Dr. Elizabeth Onyango with rich experience of conducting photovoice study shared her insights of the value and dynamics of the methodology. She also addressed critical issues during its execution, offering practical solutions and innovative approaches to enhancing community engagement through visual storytelling. The workshop aimed to equip MiFOOD team members with skills in photovoice methodology, enhancing their ability to capture the voices of communities involved in the project. This training is part of MiFOOD's commitment to adopting participatory research methods that foster the engagement with marginalized communities and enhance community impact.
MiFOOD WS2 Configuration Workshop: "Migrant Precarity and Urban Food in the Global South"

The MiFOOD Network and the IMRC welcome your participation in the MiFOOD WS2 Configuration Workshop on “Migrant Precarity and Urban Food in the Global South”. This workshop brings together esteemed and early-career scholars to discuss research plans focusing on Workstream 2 of the MiFOOD project—specifically, the role of migrants in transforming urban food chains. Researchers will engage in a comprehensive exploration of the interplay between migration, informality, gender, and food security. Spanning geographical regions including Asia, Latin America and Africa, the sessions will cover diverse topics: the links between migration and food security, the role of migrants in urban food systems, the impact of COVID-19 on women informal food vendors, and various other facets of food environments in the Global South. The purpose of this workshop is to contribute scholarly perspectives on the complex challenges surrounding migrant precarity and food systems in the Global South. It aims to foster the generation of new research ideas through mutual learning, and provide opportunities for comparative, interdisciplinary, and collaborative studies within and beyond the MiFOOD network.
MiFOOD Quito Workshop and Photovoice Exhibit: "Migration and Food (In)Security: Resilient Narratives and Post-pandemic Memory"

The MiFood Ecuador project team presented the results from the first year of the MiFOOD Quito project and inauguration of the photo exhibition "Migration and Food Insecurity: Resilient Narratives and Post-Pandemic Memory" in the Centre for Contemporary Art in Quito, Ecuador on Friday, February 23rd, 2024. The event included a discussion with stakeholders from the ACNUR, AVSI, HIAS, IOM, and the WFP, concerning the advances, challenges, future prospects for Food Security and Migration and Quito, and concluded with the signing of an inter-institutional agreement between USFQ and the IOM.
Women Feeding Cities Workshop: "After the Pandemic: Perspectives on International Migration and Food Insecurity"

The MiFOOD network and the Women Feeding Cities project jointly host a workshop with the University of Namibia in Windhoek on October 16, 2023. The workshop titled “After the Pandemic: Perspectives on International Migration and Food Insecurity” showcases eight presentations highlighting cutting-edge research in the dynamic interactions between migration and food insecurity during and after the COVID-19 pandemic in multiple African countries, China and Mexico. The workshop disseminates some of the latest findings from the MiFOOD project and provides a rich and comprehensive context for the Women Feeding Cities project.
MiFOOD Methodology Workshop

The workshop is to facilitate dialogues among MiFOOD partners on the quantitative and qualitative methods they use for MiFOOD projects, sharing lessons and challenges they face, inviting feedback from the three speakers and others in the MiFOOD network and discussing the next steps of research design. To achieve the goal of knowledge sharing, partners are encouraged to ask questions and share their research design and methods in the discussion session. This workshop will provide useful methodological guidance that will inform the various MiFOOD research activities.
The workshop features presentations from Drs. S. Irudaya Rajan from IIMAD (India), Victoria Prieto from Universidad de la Republica (Uruguay), and Sarah Turnbull from University of Waterloo (Canada). See the workshop agenda here.
Workshop on Migration and Food Security in Global South in Nanjing

MiFOOD team members in Nanjing, China held the workshop to discuss the role of migrants in urban food security, food security of migrants in Nanjing City, the sampling strategy for food security of migrants in Nanjing, how to investigate the food security of left-behind families and the survey strategy of migrants in sectors such as manufacturing, construction and the food sector in the city.
Stakeholder Workshop of MiFOOD Project in Maputo

The objectives of the workshop were to give an overview of the previous collaborative projects: HCP, AFSUN, and SAMP; Introduce the project to stakeholders; Discuss research questions of the interest of the local Municipal Government; Find strategies to include in Migration Policy and Migration and Food Security the real concerns of the municipality; and Assess the extent to which research could partner with authorities in the process of production of knowledge in the context of migration and food.
Breakfast Workshop with Representatives of Migrant Shelters

The objective of the workshop was to present our research project to representatives of the main migrant shelters in the Metropolitan Zone of the Valley of Mexico and surrounding areas (Metepec, capital of the State of Mexico) and to investigate the problem of food in their shelters.
